Core Value: Integrity

Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. That is what the strict meaning is but what does it mean in the context of health and fitness?

I wanted to take some time to talk about Integrity. Integrity is one of our core values at OPEX Ottawa. If you think about integrity it’s not only about doing what’s right. When thinking about integrity most people will think about doing the right thing. Their brain will naturally gravitate towards thinking “what is the right thing to do in this situation”. If you do the right thing at the right moment that must mean you have integrity. We like to go a step deeper and ask “are we doing what’s right even when nobody is looking. When nobody is looking and it’s the most difficult decision are you making the best decision. There’s been a lot of situations where the easy thing is to say yes but the correct decision is to say no. Saying no in the short term is difficult since you are sure deal with some conflict but in the long term it will benefit the client. It’s kind of like you saying no to your desert today so that you can get closer to your health goals. It’s a short term sacrifice for the long term gain.

Creating a great relationship with every client takes time and patience. However, you don’t build a great relationship by just agreeing with every decision your client makes. Sometimes, you need to stick to your principles and explain why this can a disastrous decision for them. In our experience, being honest is the tough part of the job but it allows the relationship to flourish over time. It’s the best way to main great results for the client long term. After all, we believe in the long term journey through fitness. Fitness is not a fix or a short term solution for being over fat. Fitness should be a behaviour that is practiced over time. We are there to help begin and progress that habit so that fitness becomes like breakfast. You eat breakfast everyday, you move around everyday.
